In the beautiful world of watchmaking, there are many styles and types of timepieces. Different types of watches can have different function and usage, depending on the characteristics of the piece. A watch is not only a timekeeping tool, but it can also be used for other purposes. Like for example, a diving watch, the purpose of this type of timepiece is to count the minutes that you might be underwater and know when to ascend to the surface. This is able because of the unidirectional rotating bezel of this type of watches. You might ask, why a unidirectional bezel? And the answer is because that prevents the bezel to go to the other side and skip minutes without knowing.
Therefore, I think is a good idea to talk about the best dive watches for men and make a list of, in my opinion, are 5 good options. The list will go from more affordable options to higher end and priced ones. I can imagine that many people, including myself, don’t use these watches for the original purposes of it, but a diving watch has a sporty look, which makes it a very good option for an everyday watch or a more casual watch if your purpose is not diving with it.
Casio MDV106 – 1A
Let’s start the list with a watch of a brand that is well-known for offering well affordable watches and for bringing to the world the well-known G-shock brand, I am talking about Casio and this time the diving version of the brand the Casio MDV106 – 1A. This watch is, in my opinion, the best diver under 100 dollars, because of the reliability of the brand and the characteristics offered for the price. When you see the watch you can instantly see that is a watch for the sea and inspired by it.
It comes with a 44mm stainless steel case and 12mm of thickness, all This comes with black unidirectional rotating bezel and black dial in which you can appreciate the luminous white markers and a nice marlin drawing which gives a more diving aesthetic to the piece. At the 3 o’clock position is situated a date complication and a seconds hand that has a red finish which can be useful when you are at 200m above the water. The watch has a quartz movement and comes with a black rubber band with a very sporty look and also very good to use in the water.
The second watch in this list is nothing more and nothing less than the Seiko SKX007/009, a watch that is considered to be the best value watch out there, which also is sometimes compared to watches that are ten times the price of this watch, because of the simple aesthetic design and build quality. All these make this watch such a good option, not only if you are looking for a watch that is relatively affordable, but in general. Another pro. of the watch is that it comes from the very well-known brand, Seiko, which you surely know about and if not make sure to check this previous article to have a better understanding.
The characteristics of this timepiece are, a 40mm stainless steel case and a black unidirectional bezel in the SKX007 and a Pepsi style one in the SKX009, very useful when diving. The dial is black in the 007 and blue in the 009, both have white markers with the Seiko’s torch-bright luminous paint. The hands are stainless steel with a white luminous paint finish in the inside, which looks perfect with the outer steel finish.
With a day/date complication and a 200m water resistant, you have a perfect combo for a diving watch and all This comes to life thanks to the in house Seiko’s automatic movement which is a very good and reliable one. It comes with a stainless steel bracelet or rubber band, but it is so versatile that you can put any type of strap and it will look good.
Glycine Combat Sub
The Glycine Combat Sub and more specifically, the GL0083, is a very good option which comes from a Swiss brand, which is now part of the Invicta group. The brand has some history and it was founded in 1914, so we can imagine that they have some experience in the watchmaking industry. They emphasize on making rugged and reliable products, which in my opinion, those are the most important two factors for a diving watch.
The Combat Sub GL0083 comes with a stainless steel 42mm case which houses the caliber GL224 Swiss automatic movement. On the outer part of the case you can see a black colored stainless steel unidirectional rotating bezel and on the inside, it has a black dial with the markers and hands with super luminova, which gives them a yellowish color and a kind of vintage aesthetic. The date complication is situated at the 3 o’clock position and all this is protected by a sapphire crystal. As it is expected the watch comes with a 200m water resistant and to follow the diving aesthetic it comes with a nato two-tone nylon strap, which gives a very sporty yet vintage finish to the watch.
Tudor Black Bay
For the fourth watch on this list, I thought about the mighty Tudor Black Bay, which, in my opinion, is one of the best looking watches out there. It combines the vintage style with a modern and more refreshed modern looks and size. The Tudor brand is a very well-known and reliable brand. It is part of the Rolex group, as a matter of fact, the older Tudor watches used to share components with some older Rolex models. Don’t confuse this, Tudor is no Rolex, disregarding the fact that both are from the same owner, Tudor is a completely different brand and offers some different and unique timepieces.
The watch which is discussed here, the Black Bay, has a 41mm case size in stainless steel and a polished and satin finish on it, with a matte black one direction rotating bezel, with a small red accent finish at the 12 o’clock position, giving it a more classic style. The movement is a caliber MT5602 automatic with a 70-hour power reserve. The black dial with white markers and hands with some bronze finish is what gives this watch a unique character, there are other color options two, for the dial and the bezel. With a water-resistant of 200m and a domed sapphire crystal, this watch can be used for almost everything and is very durable. There is the option of a leather or nylon strap as well as a stainless steel bracelet.
Last but not least, a watch from a brand that doesn’t need any introduction and I am pretty sure that you know or at least heard about, the Rolex Submariner. The Submariner is considered to be the “daddy” or benchmark for any other dive watch. It has some history and many versions that were made throughout all the years this iconic and mythical model exists. For many, including myself, the submariner might be the favorite watch out there, at least the favorite sports/dive watch and a watch that many of us look like a life goal to get to own one.
The characteristics of this magnificent watch are the following, a 40mm oystersteel case, as Rolex calls it. The bezel is made from ceramic and is a unidirectional rotating one, as expected in this level of watch. On the dial, you have the markers in 18ct white gold with the superluminova technology as well as the hands. The movement is the caliber 3130 in house self-winding mechanical movement, which is one of the most reliable movements and has a 48hour power reserve. The crystal is sapphire and it comes with an astonishing 300m water resistance.
These were some watches that I think are the best options for a dive watch, at different price points, There are other models that I had also in mind when doing this list but I think these were the most relevant at there price points. Please comment which one is your favorite and why and also which other watches do you think are very good options too and should be part of this list, Hope you enjoyed the article as much as I enjoyed doing it.
