The watch community is one of the most beautiful communities, where you can discuss brands, certain watches and also the history of a brand or watch with fellow watch collectors and chat about it all day. However, it can also be one of the most difficult markets and communities to please when it regards to certain watches and designs, for example, the iconic design of the Rolex Submariner, which for many people be their grail watch and also an industry standard for many watch manufacturers, so when another brand releases a watch that has a very similar design than the diver watch Rolex Submariner the watch community and especially the watch snobs get angry and full of hate for that brand and watch, saying that is a ripoff and things like that but in reality it is a homage for a very iconic watch. I am talking about the Invicta Pro Diver.
Let’s talk about Invicta, the brand that manufactures the infamous Pro Diver. The brand was created in 1837 by its founder Raphael Picard in Chaux – de – Fonds in Switzerland by the name of Invicta which means invincible in Latin, believing in fine Swiss watches at modest prices. Until the 1970s the brand was focusing on creating fine manual and automatic timepieces but on those years the brand was almost killed by the quartz era. Then in 1991, the brand was reestablished by the founder’s descendants and also focused on making fine watches at modest prices, like at the beginnings of the brand.
In the earlier 2000s, Invicta adds the S. Coifman watch brand and becomes the Invicta Watch Group, later, in the 2010s they acquire the luxury watch brand TechnoMarine and some years ago they acquire the Glycine watch brand.
The Pro Diver comes in many variations, it can come with a quartz movement or an automatic one. The bezels can be in black or blue or any other color options and also different bezel designs. Because it is a divers’ watch it comes with a unidirectional bezel. There are a lot of many options and colors and variations of the Invicta Pro Diver at different price points too.
However, I will be talking about the Pro diver with black stainless steel unidirectional rotating bezel and black dial, it has a stainless steel bracelet and a stainless steel case which is home of an automatic movement with caliber NH35A. It has a 40mm case size, which is a very good size that almost everybody can easily wear, I would say that is almost the perfect size for a man watch. Especially for a sportier divers’ watch. It has a mineral crystal and 200m of water resistance. On the dial, you have a date complication with a magnifying glass to be able to see the date better and much clearer.
It can also be a very versatile watch because you can change the bracelet to a nato strap and make it sportier or also put a leather strap and make it more casual and rock it with a pair of chinos and a nice shirt. Also, with the stainless steel bracelet is can be a little bit more elegant, but keep in mind that it is not a dress watch, but you can eventually use it with a more casual suit but there are better options for dress watches. However, this watch is perfect for every day and every time, because of the design and the size it is a very versatile and casual watch.
As I stated earlier, this Pro Diver has a Japanese automatic 24 jewels movement, which in reality is a Seiko movement, so you are getting the reliability of the Seiko brand and watches in a watch with a lot of history and that also looks very nice. It also comes with a display back which allows you to see the movement, which has a mineral crystal in the back display and a very nice yellow rotor which says “Invicta Watch Company” and the date of the foundation of the company which is 1837 in a very nice font, in my opinion that is a very nice and subtle touch that Invicta is giving to the watch and the displayed movement.
Why a homage?
Well, the design of the Pro Diver and more specifically this model is very similar to the design of the Rolex Submariner, but of course at a different price point and some different details. If you ask a hardcore Submariner fan he would be horrified about the Pro Diver, because he would say that is a replica and a watch that is trying to imitate an icon. But in reality is that the Pro Diver is a divers’ watch like the Submariner, but it also has its uniqueness and at a more affordable price point than the Rolex is a better diver option for most of the people.
The reason I say its a homage is that it is not imitating the Submariner, instead, the design shows that it is paying a “tribute” to an all-time icon and in my opinion at the price point which can be from less than 100 dollars to a couple hundred, it is a very good diver and/or Submariner style option for many people who can’t or don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a watch. With the Invicta Pro Diver you can get a good-looking and fine watch a modest or affordable price with a good automatic movement and a good water resistance from a brand that maybe today is not the most popular but that is has a rich and long history in the watch world.
So what do you think about the Invicta Pro Diver? Do you think is a good homage watch or no? Or do you think is more like a watch of its own? Whatever is you opinion, leave a comment below with all your thoughts about the watch.
